Let It Snow by Green, Johnson, & Myracle

Finished the book

I enjoyed this book. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. The list of my favorite stories are: 1st - "The Jubilee Express," 2nd - "The Patron Saint of Pigs," and 3rd - "A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle."

SPOILER ALERT - At the end of the book, Lauren Myracle brings all the main characters together at Starbuck's. I don't remember Jeb giving Tobin a message for Addie. Maybe that didn't happen in the "A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle" story or maybe it did. Either way, a small nuisance in an otherwise good book.

Let It Snow by Green, Johnson, & Myracle

Currently on pg. 215, chapter 1 of
"The Patron Saint of Pigs" by Lauren Myracle

I finished the second story "A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle." I thought it was cute. As I said before, I was a bit put-out by the sheer stupidity of these kids venturing out in a snowstorm. However, it is a story, fiction, make-believe; so I will let it go. Of the two stories, I like "The Jubilee Express" best.

Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, & Lauren Myracle

Currently on pg. 183, chapter 10 of
"A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle" by John Green

This book is three separate stories written by three different authors. The first story was "The Jubilee Express" by Maureen Johnson. I enjoyed the story. SPOILER ALERT - The main character, Jubilee, discovers that her current boyfriend is not the one for her. She wonders if Stuart, a boy she met at the Waffle House while trying to survive a storm, is really her true love.

Now, I am reading the John Green story. He ties the two stories together by making the main three characters friends of a Waffle House employee. The three are trying to brave the storm to get to the Waffle House to spend Christmas with their friend and fourteen cheerleaders. So far, this story is a bit frustrating because it was dangerous for the three main characters to leave the safety of Tobin's house to try to get to a party with cheerleaders.

Reading Level: 4.6 grade
Lexile: HL730L (High-Low - high interest/low reading level)

The students have been asking for more John Green novels so I am reading this to see if it would be appropriate to add to the library collection.

Mr. Terupt Falls Again by Rob Buyea

Currently on pg. 341, chapter June - Alexia

I have noticed that there are enough references to first book that you could read this book without having read the first one. The author ends up telling you all you need to know from the first book.

I had mentioned that the title worried me. I thought that Mr. Terupt would get hurt again. Then I thought he would be okay, and then not so much. This book has had some nice twists and turns.

Only 15 pages left in the book.

Mr. Terupt Falls Again by Rob Buyea

Currently on pg. 251, chapter April - Danielle

Wow, I thought Charlie was Anna's father. Now I am not so sure of that.

Mr. Terupt Falls Again by Rob Buyea

Currently on pg. 154, chapter January - Alexia

I am love, love, love, love, loving this book. SPOILER ALERT - I was worried by the title. I didn't want Mr. Terupt to get injured again like he did in the first book. Although he is not entirely out of the woods, the author has (at this point, at least) revealed the explanation of the title.

Mr. Terupt Falls Again by Rob Buyea

Interest Level: 3-6 grade
Reading Level: 4.2
Lexile: 680
Genre: realistic fiction

Currently on pg. 22, chapter Summer-Alexia

This is the companion book to Because of Mr. Terupt. I believe the term 'companion book,' in this case, means that the author has used the same characters but the plot can stand on its own. You do not have to have read the first book, Because of  Mr. Terupt, in order to follow this book. You can go back to older posts in this blog. I read Because of  Mr. Terupt in November. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars. Like the first book, each chapter is written by one of the seven students that are in Mr. Terupt's 6th grade class.

So far in this book, the only reference to the first book was on page 14. Anna says, "As long as his [Peter's] mess-ups didn't turn into an accident like last year." I am starting to put together the storyline for each character from the last book to this one. I am excited to read this book.

Fireball by Robert Matzen

Finished the book

Why did Flight 3 crash into Potosi Mountain? In 1942, there was no black box in the cockpit of airplanes. The only record of what might have happened was on paper in a logbook that was burned up in the crash.

The press release from David L. Behncke, the president of the Air Line Pilots Association, was quoted. In it, he pointed to a disturbing trend to "blame the pilot when he was dead and unable to defend himself or point an accusing finger at the actual cause or causes." (p. 298) This comment rings true for me as my father and brother died in a two-seat airplane piloted by my father.

The FBI investigated the possibility of sabotage. After Pearl Harbor and the Normandic (which was sabotaged by German operatives while docked at the port of New York), it seemed very feasible. There was a passenger Joseph Szigeti that came under investigation. He was connected with two fatal plane crashes which resulted in the deaths of Americans on Federal government business. There was no evidence found to prove sabotage or Szigeti's involvement.

Don Hackett, the pilot of the charter plane that brought Clark Gable to Vegas and the crash site, was interviewed in the 1980's. He stated that when he took off for the return trip to Burbank, he realized just how dangerous those mountains were.

Robert Matzen, Fireball's author, reported on many factors that probably played a role in the fate of Flight 3. The plane was at its maximum fly weight, heavy with passengers and their luggage. The plane was off course which ran it straight into the mountain. Why? The pilots could have been trying to shave a few minutes off of their flight plan. They were behind schedule. It was a quick climb out of the Vegas airport to avoid the mountains. The pilots had not flown out of that airport before and it was dark. Due to the black-out because of the threat of air strike, there were no beacons on the mountain. The flight plan for Flight 3 had recently been changed but had all the documents in the cockpit been updated? Pilots of that day 'flew by the seat of their pants.' They used landmarks and paper maps. The cockpit map of the area around that Vegas airfield folded in such a way that the mountains were on another side of a fold. In a cockpit of the DC-3, the pilots did not commonly unfold the entire map.

About three-fourths of the way through this book, I almost stopped reading it. I wanted to know more about Carole Lombard but a large part of this book is about the crash that took her life.  At times, it was hard to read about the crash. I could relate to what Carole's husband, Clark Gable, was going through. I did appreciate the time and attention that the author gave to the other twenty-one people who lost their lives as well. Well written and informative, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Not 5 because it was a heavy, emotional read.
